About Little Silver Wood

About us

Little Silver Wood is a small family-run sawmill based in Muddiford near Barnstaple in North Devon.

The business is owned by Stu Baillie and began in 2013 selling firewood. What started as a small side project gradually grew as demand increased and new opportunities appeared.

In the early days, logs were cut at home using a small machine, mainly as a hobby. As the business developed, it expanded and eventually moved to a former quarry site where the sawmill operates today.

How the Sawmill Grew

As demand increased, the equipment improved as well. The first step was a small band saw capable of cutting smaller timbers and cross cuts. Over time this developed into a much larger sawmill capable of cutting full-size trees into beams, boards and other timber products.

Today the sawmill handles a wide range of timber and continues to grow steadily while remaining a relatively small and hands-on operation.

A Family Business

Little Silver Wood is run by Stu Baillie together with two of his sons, along with a skilled carpenter and woodworker who specialises in joinery and bespoke work, including kitchens.

Stu mainly works directly with customers, discussing projects and helping people find the right timber for what they are building.

Because the business is small and family-run, it allows us to work closely with customers and produce timber to suit each project rather than offering only standard sizes.

What We Produce

At our North Devon sawmill we produce a range of timber products including:

• Timber roof shingles
• Timber wall shingles and cladding
• Structural beams
• Timber slabs for tables and furniture
• Bespoke cut timber

More recently we have also begun producing bespoke kitchens and other joinery work.

We can also install roof shingles ourselves for customers who would prefer the work carried out by the people who produced them.

Local Timber

Wherever possible we source our timber locally, supporting nearby woodland and reducing transport distances.

Because we cut everything ourselves, we can produce custom sizes for almost any project, whether it’s a roof, a piece of furniture, or structural timber for a building.

Our Approach

What began as a small hobby has gradually grown into a working sawmill supplying customers across the UK.

Even as the business has expanded, the aim has remained the same — to produce good quality timber products and work directly with customers to find practical solutions for their projects.
